Imagine that! Enforcing the law actually works!
The Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday that illegal crossings at the southern border are down a whopping 70% over this time last year under President Obama. April marks the fourth straight month of improvement.
In addition, the number of illegal immigrant children is below 1,000 for the first time in recent records, The Washington Times learned.
“Just 998 children were caught trying to sneak across the border in April, and only 1,119 people traveling as families were nabbed,” the report stated. “Just five months earlier, in December, more than 16,000 family members were caught.”
In December 2016, a total of 43,251 aliens crossed the border. In March of this year, that number was down to 12,196. April saw the number drop less significantly to 11,129.
An increase in security and an administration enforcing the nation’s laws are credited, according to DHS spokesman David Lapan:
“A lot of the discussion about changes in our enforcement policy and the way we are going about doing business, we believe that has deterred people. When you get here it is likely you are going to get caught, you are going to be returned to your country. It’s causing people to have second thoughts about making those attempts to enter the country illegally.”
The only thing not changing at our southern border is the amount of illegal drugs smuggled into the U.S. While marijuana seizures have slowed, methamphetamines, cocaine, and heroin have risen.
